Since its inception in 1999, the Cup of Excellence has been an innovative, educational, and life changing program for coffee farmers. The annual competition was established both to offer farmers, particularly small holders who often lack the resources of large estates, an avenue to have their product professionally evaluated, showcased, and potentially purchased for premium prices, and to incentivize a new generation of farmers to cultivate exceptional coffees. The competition is free to enter, and the top 40 coffees from each country (as chosen by a jury of experts) are auctioned with the top coffees commanding prices well over 100.00 per pound.

We were lucky to get our hands on this beautiful, naturally-processed Ethiopian from farmer Dush Lemiso Uke. Dush owns a little over 1/3 acres in Sidama, a region known for its fertile soil and cool temperatures. This is his first year competing and ranked in the top 15 in the nation, with an overall score of 88.33 points. This coffee is sweet and elegant; we taste tangerine and peach, with honeysuckle-like florals lingering on the palette.
